Stanley Cup Playoffs Second Round Picks

NBC must’ve vomited when they saw the western conference match-ups take shape.

#1 New York Rangers vs. #7 Washington Capitals
New York struggled in surviving their first round series with Ottawa. Washington played way over their heads against the Bruins. No Credentials is predicting a market correction in this match-up.

Rangers over Capitals 4-2

#5 Philadelphia Flyers vs. #6 New Jersey Devils
The Devils do not have the defensive fortitude to slow down the Flyers juggernaut of an offense. Of all the series, this one should be the most lopsided (you know what that means folks. Get your money on the Devils right now).

Flyers over Devils 4-0

#3 Phoenix Coyotes vs. #4 Nashville Predators
Now that the Bruins are out, I plan on spending the rest of the playoffs picking against Mike Smith and the Coyotes until they hoist the Stanley Cup.

Predators over Coyotes 4-2

#2 St. Louis Blues vs. #8 Los Angeles Kings
This will be the lowest scoring series of the second round. St. Louis has more depth, but I like Jonathon Quick a smidge more than the Elliott/Halak tandem. I won’t be betting on this series.

Kings over Blues 4-3

10 Awesome Things That Happened This Past Weekend (4/20-4/22)

10. Fenway Turns 100, Red Sox Celebrate With Epic Implosion
Boston’s play was so awful against New York that God did them a favor and dumped rain Sunday night, canceling an inevitable Yankee sweep. No Credentials’ news department is working on a story about Bobby Valentine, so stay tuned…

9. Dwyane Wade Bans Girlfriend From Courtside Side Seats
A stupid story for sure, but the headline is funny enough. In related news, I’ve banned my wife from ever attending my local open gym so my jumpers don’t become even more erratic than they already are.

8. Lakers Defeat Oklahoma City in Double-Overtime Slugfest
Overshadowing Kobe Bryant’s heroics was the violent elbow to the head Metta World Peace delivered to James Harden. I’m still trying to figure out how World Peace can call it an accident. I’ll give a fake prize to the first reader who can come up with another time someone celebrated a great play by swinging his or her elbow back at full force.

7. Denny Hamlin Steals Win From Martin Truex Jr. at Kansas
Truex dominated most of the afternoon, but when the sun finally peaked through on a miserable cold day, Hamlin came to life and stole the trophy. That’s two wins for No Credentials pre-season championship pick.

6. Kings Knock Out Canucks
5. Predators Eliminate Red Wings
The folks at NBC won’t like two of the most popular teams getting eliminated in the first round, but it’s great to see two teams with little to no recent success come up with a first round win. Both Los Angeles (behind Jonathan Quick) and Nashville (behind Pekka Rinne) are great examples of how far a goalie can take you.

4. Jon Jones Manhandles Rashad Evans
Even on an off night, Jones was still in command of Evans for the entire match.

3. Real Madrid Stuns Barcelona
Being not much of a futbol guy, I always had assumed that Cristiano Ronaldo was an over-rated pretty boy. His game-winning goal Saturday proves otherwise.

2. White Sox Pitcher Philip Humber Throws Perfect Game
I don’t mean to piss on Mr. Humber’s fire, but shouldn’t this feat get an asterisk because he did it against the Mariners?

1. Tyler Seguin Lifts Bruins to Game 7
It took six games, but Boston’s young phenom finally made a difference with the game-winning goal Sunday. Seguin and the rest of the big guns on Boston had been quiet all series. If they fire on all cylinders Wednesday, the Bruins will move on to round 2.

10 Awesome Things That Happened This Past Weekend (4/13-4/15)

10. Jacoby Ellsbury Dislocates His Shoulder in Red Sox Home Opener
When Jacoby Ellsbury last dealt with a significant injury early in the 2010 season, he missed roughly 85% of the games. Red Sox fans should be on edge.

9. Oklahoma City Demolishes Sacramento Kings Friday Evening
Here’s your “Shameless Plug of the Team That No Credentials Picked in the Sportsbook Survivor Pool”, sponsored by Geico.

8. Lakers Sweep Season Series With Mavericks Without Kobe Bryant
Much has been made of the late-season surge by the Boston Celtics (and rightfully so. Against all odds Boston is now a legitimate title contender), but what about their long-time west coast rivals? Ramon Sessions has stabilized the backcourt, and the Gasol/Bynum tandem has stepped up while Kobe Bryant deals with a shin injury.

7. Greg Biffle Wins a Snooze-Fest at Texas
The race ended with 234 consecutive green flag laps, which was an outcome that no one other than Greg Biffle must’ve been thrilled with.

6. Canucks Bench Roberto Luongo
Unfortunately for Vancouver, a switch in goalies didn't prevent the number one seed in the west from going down 3-0 against the Kings.

5. Blackhawks Cap Wild Game 2 Comeback With Overtime Goal
NASCAR had nearly put me into a coma Saturday night, but thankfully I regained consciousness in time to see the wild ending to the Blackhawks-Coyotes game. Is there anything worse than blowing a one-goal lead with 5 seconds left in regulation and then losing in overtime?

4. Red Sox Take 3 Out of 4 Over Tampa Bay
It’s hard to call a series in April vital, but this one was pretty close to that for Boston. They needed to make a statement against one of their two rivals in the AL East. They’ll go for the sweep in the Patriots Day game Monday morning.

3. Predators Win First Playoff Game at Joe Louis Arena, Lead 2-1 Over Red Wings
Game 3 was filled with solid defense and stellar goaltending from Nashville’s Pekka Rinne. In other words, it was the exact opposite of the third game of the Penguins-Flyers series.

2. Flyers Drop 16 Goals on Penguins in Two Games, Take 3-0 Series Lead
Thank God that birth control’s effectiveness isn’t equal to Marc-Andre Fleury’s save percentage in the playoffs so far, otherwise there would be significantly more unplanned pregnancies. The Penguins look like a team that has lost all composure, even resorting to hair pulling at the end of Sunday’s game.

1. Bruins Regain Home Ice Advantage With Game 3 Win in Washington
As someone supporting the Bruins, I would’ve appreciated it if they took a break from playing cardiac hockey and won 4-1 Monday evening, but I guess a Chara goal with 2 minutes left to win the game is all right.

10 Awesome Things That Happened This Past Weekend (5/6-5/8)

10. Pacquiao Dominates Sugar Shane Mosley
This fight would have been much more interesting if we could’ve teleported the 2001 version of Mosley into the ring Saturday night.

9. Derek Jeter Comes Back From the Dead
Jeter’s declining performance has been equal parts depressing and amusing. As a Red Sox fan, I’m happy to know that the Yankees a shortstop with no range and declining power over $50 million for the next three years (I wrote an extended piece about Jeter last November when Jeter was still a free agent, which covered most of the issues that signing Jeter long term would bring). As a general sports fan, it’s been sad to watch one of the most important athletes of the last 15 years become a punch line. Before this weekend, Jeter had only two extra base hits in 28 games. He smacked a double Saturday night, and then cranked out two home runs against Texas on Sunday. Don’t expect too many performances like this the rest of the season, but it was fun to see the old Derek Jeter for a weekend.

8. Predators Force Return Trip to Nashville, Win Game 5 in Vancouver
I’ve been writing about Pekka Rinne and the Predators for three straight weeks, mostly because I really enjoy the name Pekka. I’m happy they kept the ride going for one more week. No Credentials is officially picking Nashville to win Game 6 (which means you should all get your money on Vancouver right now).

7. Animal Kingdom Wins Kentucky Derby
I’m not sure what’s more enjoyable, watching the race or seeing the owners of the horses and their goofy hats. Also, I’m a big fan of the names of horses. In no particular order, here are some names I would consider naming a racehorse.

  1. The Demoralizer
  2. Text From Favre
  3. Zoso (Led Zeppelin reference)
  4. Rick James Bitch
  5. Jimmer
  6. Pekka
  7. Supernaut (my favorite Black Sabbath song)
  8. Dick Trickle (legendary American race driver, most famous for being named Dick Trickle)
  9. Ace on the River

6. Justin Verlander Throws 2nd No Hitter This Week
The masses are begging me to begin the bring steroids back to baseball movement after Verlander tossed a no-no just five days after Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano did. For Verlander, Saturday’s effort was his second career no-hitter.

5. Regan Smith Pulls Off Upset at Darlington, Harvick Swings at Kyle Busch
It’s a good thing the Celtics-Heat game ended a half-hour before the NASCAR race did, otherwise I wouldn’t of known the race was happening.
You’ve got to feel bad for Regan Smith. This is a guy that had a win taken away from him at Talladega in 2008 because NASCAR ruled he illegally passed Tony Stewart below the yellow line (check the video to see what you think. Personally, I believe NASCAR was trying to get a bigger name into victory lane). He has been driving his ass off for the under funded Furniture Row team, which is the only NASCAR organization based out of Colorado, for the past three years. Smith finally pulls off a win (holding off the much faster Carl Edwards in the process), but it’s overshadowed by Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick acting like morons.

4. Bruins Sweep Flyers
Boston was able to get the job this year against the Flyers, but they had to pay a steep price to pull off the sweep. Center Patrice Bergeron suffered a concussion halfway through Game 4, and is out indefinitely. Bergeron had major problems with concussions in the past, so there is a very real possibility that we will not see him on the ice for the rest of the playoffs.

3. Grizzlies Take Game 3 in Overtime
Memphis was down 16 during the 3rd quarter, and 13 at the start of the 4th, before holding Oklahoma City to 17 points in the 4th quarter and overtime. Zach Randolph continued his month long tear with a 21-21 game. If Memphis takes Game 4, you can book them for a date with Dallas in the Western Conference Finals.

2. Mavericks Destroy Lakers
Los Angeles showed some life in Game 3 before blowing a seven-point lead with five minutes to play. In Game 4, they looked like a team that was ready for summer vacation. Look for more on the Lakers from No Credentials later in the week.

1. Rondo Dislocates Elbow, Returns to Help Celtics Win Game 3
Just in case you forgot how badass Rajon Rondo is, watch this video. Then remember that after getting his dislocated elbow popped into place, Rondo was back on the court at the start of the 4th quarter. I’m not sure how he’s going to do playing with one arm the rest of the series (if Miami isn’t setting up screens and nailing Rondo’s left arm every trip down the court, than Erik Spoelstra deserves to be fired), but Rondo’s epic Game 3 performance will never be forgotten.

10 Awesome Things That Happened This Past Weekend (4/29-5/1)

10. NFL Lockout Reinstated
Hopefully players were able to make some use out of the team facilities while they were able to use them for about 40 minutes. At this point, it’s almost like the NFL is trying to intentionally antagonize their fans. Think of it like a rock band that put out an album that was universally praised by the masses (something along the lines of “Nevermind” by Nirvana), but then made their follow-up album less accessible to the general public. One would think that as long as games are not delayed or lost in the fall, people will watch, but the decline in TV ratings for the NFL Draft (down 20% on the first night from last year’s coverage) would indicate that sports fans are a little tired of football and it’s labor issues.

9. Derek Lowe Apologizes For DUI
Of all professional athletes, Derek Lowe would’ve ranked relatively low on the list of players I would expect to get arrested for racing their Porsche while drunk.

8. New England Patriots Draft QB Ryan Mallet in 3rd Round
Before idiot Patriots fans get more overly excited than they already are about drafting Tom Brady’s “future replacement”, let me quickly explain to you why this pick was made.
It was one day this past March, and Bill Belichick was in his office coming up with new zone blitz packages. He had ESPN on the television. He wasn’t paying much attention to it until he heard Tom Brady’s name. Then all of a sudden, he sees this. He’s got a f***ing ponytail, the Hoodie thinks to himself. Wait is he dancing…there’s no way he’s dancing…holy s*** he’s f***ing dancing.
It is at that moment that Belichick realized that he needed to rattle Brady’s cage, hence the reason he tabs a quarterback who he knows the media will anoint as the heir to the starting QB gig in New England. Knowing how competitive Brady is (he still gets emotional talking about having to wait until the 6th round to get drafted), Belichick now knows he will have a fully invested Brady going into 2011. The icing on the cake will be when the Patriots rope some desperate franchise into trading a first and third round pick in the 2013 draft for Mallet.

7. Indians Sweep Tigers
Before the season, I predicted that Cleveland would finish 4th in the AL Central with a record of 63-99. Amazingly, on May 1st, this team has already won 19 of its first 27 games and is showing no signs of stopping. Eventually the pitching should come back to Earth a little bit (hopefully not Justin Masterson. For a guy I figured would be off my fantasy team within a month, he’s been pretty solid), but their offense looks much stronger than originally thought.

6. Sharks Take First Two Games Over Red Wings
A year ago, Antti Niemi was the goaltender for a Blackhawks team that swept San Jose in the Western Conference Finals. After receiving little interest from other NHL teams as a free agent last off-season, Niemi signed a 1-year, $2.5 million deal with San Jose. By the time the playoffs rolled around this year, he had secured the starting goalie spot in San Jose, and so far in the series against Detroit, he has been their best player. What a difference a year makes.

5. Predators Win Game 2 in Vancouver in Double Overtime
Nashville, behind elite goaltending from Pekka Rinne, managed to steal a game from top seeded Vancouver. This looks like it will be a series full of 1-0, 2-1 type games.

4. Heat Control Game 1 Against Boston
As a Celtic’s homer, it’s easy to blame their long layoff after sweeping the Knicks as the reason for Boston being so rusty. However, Miami only had to play one extra game that was two days later. Perhaps Paul Pierce’s ejection will get the Celtics fired up for Game 2.

3. Bruins Pummel Flyers in Game 1
I predicted that Boston would have an easier time scoring goals against Philadelphia than they did against Montreal, but certainly didn’t expect them to score seven in one game. The Bruins blew a 3-0 series lead (and 3-0 lead in Game 7) against Philadelphia last year, so don’t expect them to step off the accelerator.

2. Lightning Take 2 in Washington
Tampa Bay’s second win was particularly impressive, because they rallied to win after Alexander Ovechkin tied the game with just over a minute left in regulation. The Capitals out shot Tampa 37-23 in Game 2, but 79-year-old goalie Dwayne Roloson has morphed into a brick wall. A hot goalie can lead even a mediocre team all the way to the Stanley Cup. If you were to pick the two hottest goalies in the league right now, it would be Roloson and Antti Niemi.

1. Grizzlies Eliminate Spurs, Then Blast Thunder in Game 1
Before one can truly analyze how amazing the Grizzlies accomplishments are this season, one needs to first look at the events of the past three years that have shaped the make-up of the team.

February 1st, 2008 – Memphis trades franchise C-PF Pau Gasol to Los Angeles for at the time was considered the basketball equivalent of a poop sandwich. Little did we know at the time that his younger brother Marc (who was sent from LA to Memphis) would turn into a solid NBA center.

June 25th, 2009 – The Grizzlies draft Hasheem Thabeet out of the University of Connecticut with the 2nd overall pick in the draft. Thabeet will go down as one of the biggest top-5 busts in NBA Draft history. He spent a great deal of time playing in the D-League, and eventually, Memphis traded Thabeet (along with a future first round draft pick) to Houston for Shane Battier. To rephrase, Memphis gave away a future first round pick so they could get rid of a player they had just picked a year and a half earlier with the 2nd overall pick in the draft, and somehow benefited from the trade.

July 17th, 2009 – Memphis trades for Zach Randolph, who at one point was one of the poster boys for the Jail-Blazers. After wearing out his welcome with Portland, New York, and the LA Clippers, Randolph blossoms into an All-Star caliber power forward.

February 2011 – Star small forward Rudy Gay, who was in the midst of a career year, tears his rotator cuff and is lost for the season while Memphis is still fighting for a spot in the playoffs. While this would have devastated most teams, playing time is opened up for both Shane Battier and O.J. Mayo, who have since thrived defensively.

To sum up these four listed events, Memphis somehow benefited from poor trades, a risky free agent signing, an injury to a key player, and a horrendous draft pick. Memphis is like a guy that crashed his car, peed his pants, punched an old lady in the face, and yet somehow ended up with an attractive girl. I’m hoping we see seven games between them and the Thunder.

BONUS ITEM – While putting the finishing touches on this blog, I heard the news of Osama Bin Laden being struck down by U.S. forces. I’m not sure what this means in for the fight against terrorism going forward, but nevertheless this is a landmark moment.

Overconfident Stanley Cup Conference Semi-Finals Picks

After watching the exciting end to the Bruins-Canadiens series, I’m ready to prepare my Stanley Cup Playoffs 2nd Round picks. I’m feeling pretty good about myself (at least when it comes to picking NHL playoff series) after correctly choosing six of the eight winners. Furthermore, I nailed the correct distance for three of the Eastern Conference series. The only one I was way off on was the Red Wings-Coyotes series, but you can chalk that up to deep-seeded disdain for Detroit (planted by their vicious playoff battles with the Colorado Avalanche in the mid-90s. I was a front-runner as a child, so I attached myself to the Roy-Sakic-Forsberg group), and Jimmy Howard screwing my fantasy team’s save percentage this past season. Without further ado…

EASTERN CONFERENCE

#1 Washington Capitals vs. #5 Tampa Bay Lightning
I’d love to pick Tampa Bay in this series. Goalie Dwayne Roloson is roughly 67 years old, but somehow still finds a way to stop the puck. He stoned the Penguins during the final minutes of Game 7. Lastly, take a look at the dude’s picture. If you look up the word goalie in the dictionary, there should be Dwayne Roloson’s face right next to it. However, my love for Roloson does not change the fact that Washington is a superior team that has also had the luxury of extra days off. I’m predicting the Capitals to easily advance to the conference finals.
            PREDICTION = Capitals in 5

#2 Philadelphia Flyers vs. #3 Boston Bruins
Last year, Boston had a 3-0 series lead over Philly in the conference semi-finals before pulling off an epic choke job. It’s fitting that they get a chance to exercise those demons. Boston should have an easier time scoring going up against whomever Philadelphia throws in net as opposed to Carey Price.
            PREDICTION = Bruins in 6

WESTERN CONFERENCE

#1 Vancouver Canucks vs. #5 Nashville Predators
Vancouver was supposed to be the favorite going into the playoffs this season, and looked the part after winning the first three games against Chicago. Following three straight losses, a narrow overtime escape in Game 7, and a goalie controversy, and now we are looking at a very shaky club. Throw in an underrated Predators team, and this has all the makings for an upset. Just ask the Anaheim Ducks how hard it is going up against a goalie named Pekka.
            PREDICTION = Predators in 7

#2 San Jose Sharks vs. #3 Detroit Red Wings
For my money, this is the best of the four conference semi-final series. All the reasons I picked against Detroit during the first round still apply here. Throw in a strong Sharks club that has the look of a team finally ready to succeed in the playoffs, and I’ll sign off on San Jose taking the series (that means all of you should go bet money on Detroit. Right now. They’re a guaranteed winner).
            PREDICTION = Sharks in 7
