In winning
a thrilling Game 5 to earn their second Stanley Cup in three years, the Los
Angeles Kings are uniquely positioned to become a modern day NHL dynasty.
Normally the third title is the hardest for a team to capture (look at how
Miami is doing against the Spurs in the NBA Finals), but based on their roster
construction, the Kings actually could field their strongest club next season.
Of their
key players, Marion Gaborik is the only one slated to enter unrestricted free
agency this year. Fortunately for the Kings, they have over $13 million in cap
space, and Gaborik shouldn’t command more than the $7.5 million he earned last
season. Gaborik pushed the Kings to a whole new level offensively, and it’s
scary to think how good Los Angeles can be with him in the fold for an entire
regular season. The Kings haven’t been seeded higher than fourth during the
last three years (remember that they won the 2012 Cup as an eighth seed), but
2014-15 looks like it could be the year they dominate the league from start to
finish.
