10 Awesome Things That Happened This Weekend (3/28-3/30)

10. Eagles Release DeSean Jackson
Whether the rumors of DeSean Jackson’s alleged gang involvement are true, kudos to the Eagles for putting character over performance. Jackson was coming off a career year during his first season playing for Chip Kelly, and stands to be a valuable addition for whichever team picks him up.

9. Philadelphia 76ers Win an NBA Basketball Game
This is only notable because they lost their previous 26 contests.

8. Angels Lock up Mike Trout
Call me crazy, but the contracts given to Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera over the past few days feel like they should’ve been reversed.

7. Kentucky Peaks at the Perfect Time, Takes Down Louisville in Sweet 16
We thought this would be Kentucky’s only appearance in this weekend review, but like the majority of our March Madness predictions, we were wrong.

6. Rick Grimes Bites A Dude’s Jugular on “The Walking Dead”
Big news, Rick isn’t a pansy anymore!

5. Connecticut Stifles Spartans in Second Half, Advances to Final 4
I thought Michigan State fell apart after the halftime recess, which is very strange for a team coached by Tom Izzo. At least we can feel happy for Connecticut now that Jim Calhoun is no longer their Head Coach.

4. Dayton’s Run Ends, Gators Reach Final 4
Florida got to play one of the softer a slates a #1 seed has had to face in a long time, and in terms of seeding it stays easy when they face #7 Connecticut. The Huskies were the last team to beat the Gators all the way back in December.

3. The Outlaw Returns to Victory Lane
For those not in the know, The Outlaw is Kurt Busch, who after two seasons racing for under-funded teams, showed he is still championship caliber with a pass of Jimmie Johnson with 10 laps to go.

2. Clutch 3 Puts Kentucky Into Final 4
The Harrison twins have been a dynamic force the entire tournament, and an Aaron Harrison bomb with two seconds left doomed Michigan. They have more raw talent than any of the other Final 4 participants.

1. Wisconsin Takes Down #1 Seed Arizona in Overtime
Wisconsin is normally known for an offense that sort of runs like a clogged toilet, but thanks to some talented big men, this isn’t your grandfather’s Badgers. They are in there first Final Four in 14 years, and they are my pick to win the whole thing, which probably means you should wager a shit load of money on Kentucky next Saturday.

10 Awesome Things That Happened This Weekend (3/21-3/23)

10. Dodger and Diamondbacks Play Regular Season Games in Australia
I’m not sure what exactly Major League Baseball was trying to accomplish by staging games that actually a count a week before the rest of the regular season in a place not exactly known for it’s love of baseball. If Arizona finishes two games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, they should be pretty pissed.

9. Kyle Larson Earns First Career Nationwide Win
Larson backed up Saturday’s effort with an insane march to the front during Sunday’s green-white-checkered finish, nearly stealing a Sprint Cup win from Kyle Busch. Kyle Larson is the future of NASCAR.

8. Michael Vick Replaces The Sanchize
It’s only fitting that in honor of Mark Sanchez officially getting the boot from the New York Jets, we post a video of his most infamous NFL moment.

7. David Ortiz Resigned Through 2015
Boston has so little money committed to players beyond 2015 that they can afford to pay an aging Ortiz $16 million per year (if he hits certain incentives, he’ll be under contract through 2017). As the last man standing who has been on all three Red Sox championship teams this century, he deserves it.

6. Kevin Durant Leads Westbrook-less Thunder to Double Overtime Victory
Durant’s final three points came with 1.7 seconds left in double overtime, as the Thunder finished off an Eastern Conference road trip 3-0. They would be wise to think about sitting Russell Westbrook for the remainder of the regular season.

5. 4-Point Play Seals Stephen F. Austin Upset
Sadly, No Credentials pre-tourney Cinderella pick couldn’t parlay their miraculous victory over VCU into a Sweet 16 berth.

4. Kyle Busch’s Tires Don’t Explode, So He Wins Second Straight At California
I may be in the minority here, but I like races where Goodyear Eagles spontaneously combust, and especially when a flat left front ruins a Jimmie Johnson trip to victory lane.

3. Dayton Slays Another Dragon, Knocks Off Syracuse
After stifling a Syracuse squad that spent three weeks earlier in the season as the top ranked team in basketball, Dayton caught another break when #2 Kansas fell at the hands of Stanford. It’s not unrealistic to think Dayton could find themselves in the Elite 8.

2. Wichita State’s Undefeated Run Ends
For the record, we had Wichita going down in the Round of 32. Unfortunately we had Kansas State doing it, not Kentucky.

1. Duke Loses in First Round to #14 Mercer
If you’re going to lose one of your Final Four teams in the first round, it might as well be the Duke Blue Devils.

Last Minute NCAA Bracket Advice

There’s only a few hours left to fill out a bracket, and if you need last second advice, here’s some tips from someone who usually does pretty good one out of every two years.

Assess the Quality of the Players

We’re not talking on a team-by-team basis here, but we’re looking at the entire tourney field as a whole. In my opinion, the more top flight NBA talent that is playing in the tournament, the less likely it is that we see a rash of major upsets. Also, the likelihood of a small conference school like Wichita State running the table is unlikely with so many teams beginning to peak as their freshmen begin hitting their stride.

Looking for Upset Picks? Look at Your #11s and #12s

I’m too lazy to look up actual facts, but I’m willing to bet that at least two teams seeded either #11 or #12 have advanced to the Round of 32 every year for the last decade, with at least one of those advancing to the Sweet 16. We aren’t predicting any team seeded #1 through #4 losing in the first round, but we have four teams from this seed group winning a game, with #12 S.F. Austin making a Cinderella run to the Elite 8 (this blog is called No Credentials for a reason folks).

Can’t Pick a Game? It’s Conference is Your Tie-Breaker

When undecided about whom to pick, I’ll ask myself which conference is better. For example, we’re pushing #4 Michigan State past #1 Virginia because we feel the Big 10 is stronger than the ACC this year.

The Strength of a Region is Kind of Overrated

In other words, if there is a team you feel really strongly about, you shouldn’t be scared off because there are five or six scary teams in it’s region. I look at each individual match-up one at a time for each team, not taking into account that a club might have to play three hard games in a row.

Usually, One of the Top Seeds Lose in the Round of 32

It’s highly unlikely that the eight highest ranked teams make it to the Sweet 16. I almost always pick a #1 and a #2 to lose in the Round of 32, but this year we like all of the #2s to advance (thought about putting BYU over Wisconsin, but held off on it). This year’s top seed we predict to lose? Wichita State, who will fall to #9 Kansas State.

What’s the No Credentials Final 4 Prediction?

Final 4
#2 Kansas over #3 Iowa State
#1 Arizona over #3 Duke

Championship
#2 Kansas over #1 Arizona

            I can’t wait to win a $1,000,000,000.

10 Awesome Things That Happened This Weekend (3/14-3/16)

10. It Sucks (sort of) Being a NFL Runningback
Somewhere in an alternate universe where movies are reality, Coach Kilmer from “Varsity Blues” was smiling after Ben Tate only inked a two-year, $7 million deal with Cleveland.

9. Kids Die on “The Walking Dead”
While it was definitely disturbing television last night, we applaud “The Walking Dead” for taking the story in a direction only a handful of shows in television history would ever go.

8. Patriots Actually Resign a Wide Receiver
Julian Edelman is a nice re-sign, but I’m sure Tom Brady would’ve rather seen New England make this decision last year with Wes Welker.

7. Phil Jackson Signs on to Run New York Knicks
We’re not sure how many days Jackson will actually spend in New York, but at this point in his career I’m sure he can run a NBA organization like it’s a fantasy team. At the very least, it will be high comedy to watch J.R. Smith try to learn the triangle offense.

6. Julius Peppers Lands on His Feet, Joins Green Bay Packers
Who says Green Bay won’t open the checkbook in free agency? I’m not sure how Peppers (who’s always been a 4-3 defensive end) fits in a 3-4 scheme, but he is athletic enough to play as a rush linebacker.

5. Carl Edwards Wins Rain-Ravaged Food City 500
Here’s an idea NASCAR, let’s run races in only the west coast, southwest, or Florida until April. At least Cousin Carl earned a ticket to the playoffs in this farce of a Sprint Cup event.

4. Pacers Pull Off 25-Point Comeback, Win in Overtime at Detroit
Like many of the NBA superpowers in recent weeks, the Pacers had been in a bit of a funk. Perhaps a furious comeback (it still counts, even if it came against a team built by Joe Dumars) will right them for the stretch run.

3. Rich Peverley Returns to Watch the Dallas Stars Face Calgary
Considering that Peverley technically died for a few seconds the last time he was on the ice, it was awesome to see him back at the arena. Here’s to the former Bruin having a speedy recovery, and making a return to NHL competition in the near future.

2. Anthony Davis Goes Bonkers Against Boston
One of the few proclamations No Credentials has ever been right about was The Brow’s potential to be the next Kevin Garnett. He went into beast mode against the Celtics Sunday night.

1. Florida, Arizona, Wichita State, Virginia Nab #1 Seeds
We don’t want to spoil too much of our billion dollar winning bracket, so check back with us tomorrow or Wednesday for our “expert” analysis.

2014 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft Final Rosters

Due to the early regular season games being played in Australia, most of you should be drafting (or bidding on) players within the next week. To that end, we want to publish the entire 2014 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft here today. We’ll highlight some interesting picks from rounds we didn’t previously cover for each team.

Waiting on the outfield was the right move here, as Hunter Pence and Jayson Werth are both capable of delivering top-50 value. Expecting Alfonso Soriano to repeat his second half performance from last year over a full season is unrealistic, but round 13 isn’t a bad spot to make a low-risk wager. Chase Headley is only two years removed from a 2012 campaign where he delivered top-20 value, and is well worth a late round pick. Jeff Samardzija is one of the cheapest sources of elite strikeout totals in fantasy.

Normally we don’t recommend making selections based on expected run production, but Matt Carpenter is an exception. This roster is loaded with young talent that has the potential to breakout. We wouldn’t be shocked to see Rizzo or Profar make a leap, and Byron Buxton will be the most anticipated mid-season call-up of the year. One of the Cole-Minor-Cobb trio should make the jump to ace status in 2014, with our money on Gerrit Cole establishing himself as the ace of the Pirates staff.

If Billy Hamilton steals 80 bases, but does nothing else, will that be worth a sixth round pick? In redraft leagues, my gut says no. Victor Martinez is an interesting buy-low candidate, as he is poised to hit behind Miguel Cabrera. Neftali Feliz was one of the ten best closers in the game before an attempt to become a starting pitcher followed by Tommy John surgery. He isn’t a lock to hold off Joakim Soria for the gig, but if he returns to his old form, round 15 is a major discount for what his upside is. Marco Estrada was a disaster in the first half last year, but a repeat of his second half performance would catapult him into a top-20 starting pitcher. Chris Carter will hit .260 with 50 home runs one year, and round 25 is the perfect time to see if this year is it. Kris Medlen was picked long before his elbow troubles became public, so leave him off of your draft boards.

It’s becoming harder to remember that Matt Kemp was once the most valuable player in fantasy. Josh Hamilton joins Kemp on this roster, giving Team 4 two outfielder that have previously delivered top-5 value. Javier Baez is the top shortstop in the minor leagues, and should hit Wrigley Field at some point this season.

I’d be doing back flips if I could land Ian Kinsler in round 7. Even if the power numbers are own, he’s set up very well as the table setter for Miguel Cabrera. Ben Revere quietly was pretty productive while healthy for the Phillies, and could deliver 45 steals if he can suit up for 150 games. Xander Bogaerts provides a high ceiling to go with eligibility at two premium positions.

A few years ago Jason Heyward and Matt Wieters were hailed as the future superstars of the game. While Heyward has had moments when healthy, both of these guys feel like they are entering the post-hype sleeper category. Matt Adams is arguably the most intriguing late round power bat.

It’s hard to imagine that Manny Machado can take a step forward statistically after recovering from such a horrific leg injury, which makes the odds of a full-blown breakout happening this year unlikely. Advanced numbers love Danny Salazar this year, and he has the look of the pitcher most likely to deliver a Matt Harvey-esque breakout. Curtis Granderson seems like a guy that will either hit 35 home runs, or deliver little to no value at all. Anything earlier than round 10 is too high a price for me.

Fearless prediction…Carlos Beltran will deliver top-40 value on a per-game basis. Your guess on how many games he plays is as good as mine. There are a lot of young pitchers that need to take a step forward in order to make this rotation viable. Iwakuma will miss most of April, so he’s probably better suited to be taken around Round 10 or 11.

Is Albert Pujols really done? If he adapts to a DH role, I think there is still some production left in his bat. Joe Mauer has his best chance to duplicate his MVP season now that he’s free from catching duties. Keep the loss of catcher eligibility in mind if you’re building a keeper team. C.C. Sabathia will go much earlier than round 21 in your draft, but just know that I will need to see him return to his previous form before using a mid-round pick on him.
